IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WLUC) — The ribbon was cut on a brand new skin care center on US-2 in Iron Mountain on Wednesday. The new dermatology group previously rented space from Bellin Health, but has now expanded.
“As the practice grew and our need for additional space grew, we decided we wanted to be more involved with the Iron Mountain community and surrounding areas. This is what led us to build our standalone facility,” said Kevan Lewis, founder and dermatologist of New Dermatology Group.
The practice had a soft opening for the new location over the winter, and Wednesday was the grand opening. The Green Bay-based group has clinics in Iron Mountain and Escanaba.
A total of 60 staff members work across all clinics, including a dozen at Iron Mountain.
“Most specialties of medicine are in general shortage in rural areas. So we wanted to bring our services into the community,” Lewis said.
Construction of the new facility took about two years. Lewis says it overcame supply chain issues.
“The pandemic has extended our build time for construction,” Lewis said.
The Dickinson Area Chamber of Commerce presented the groundbreaking certificate and members say it will give them more choice in health care.
“They have a whole line of doctors who can help you with any skin care or dermatology needs. We need it in our area,” said Suzanne Larson, executive director of the Dickinson Area Chamber of Commerce.
Lewis says the larger practice allows patients to stay close to home and only the most severe cases need to travel to Green Bay for care.
Lewis says skincare is a growing need, with annual checkups recommended.
“A lot of skin issues are tied to a lifetime of accumulated sun exposure,” Lewis said. “For this reason, a large percentage of the population is at risk for skin cancer.”
For the new facility, Lewis says he still needs finishing touches on the landscaping.
