Many skin care products available in the markets that claim to lighten scars and pigmentation have red onion as the most common ingredient. Red onions effectively lighten even skin tones, so they are also found in skin lightening creams.
Milk contains lactic acid which lightens the skin. Milk, buttermilk, and even curds can effectively lighten skin pigments. Apply milk with cotton balls on the affected area. Repeat it twice a day for best results.
Tomatoes are rich in lycopene which protects the skin from photo damage. The long-term effects of photo-damaged skin are reversed by applying tomato paste to it.
