Britons use eight different skincare products to combat skin problems

The BRITS use an average of eight different skincare products in their quest to tackle their skin issues.

A survey of 2,000 adults found that less than 20% found the skincare routine “perfect” for their skin type, although nine in 10 knew it was important to stick with it.

And one in 10 people have tried sixteen or more different bottles, lotions and potions to look good.

Nearly half (45%) choose products proven to work in clinical research and 38% look for those made with natural ingredients.

Nadav Shraibom, Scientific Founder and Celebrity Skin Consultant at Medovie, who commissioned the research, said: “Finding the perfect skincare routine, especially for people with chronic skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, can go a long way, especially when you’re not sure as to what your problem may be.

“While trying different products can help you find your perfect routine, it can actually do more harm than good and could damage your skin barrier, causing more irritation and inflammation.

“Remember that the perfect skin routine involves the three Ps – patience, perseverance and prevention.

“If your skin condition is triggered by stress and anxiety, then it can turn into a painful vicious cycle, so it’s best to try to maintain your skin health to help alleviate some of the symptoms.”

The research found that three quarters had been formally diagnosed with a skin condition, such as eczema or psoriasis, – with an average wait of four and a half months to find out what it was.

And 29% had to wait more than six months to have their skin problem diagnosed.

Unsurprisingly, six in ten people wished they could get their diagnosis sooner, with the most common complaints being eczema (54%), acne (32%) and psoriasis (31%).

Because of the time it takes to get a formal diagnosis, six in 10 people regretted those choices, even though 49% knew full well what they were doing could be harmful.

Just under half (47%) admit to scratching their skin and one in three have used too aggressive a scrub.

Three in 10 have over-cleansed and 30% admit to not taking their moisturizer, which can make the irritation of inflamed, irritated skin worse.

As a result, 21% missed a social engagement due to a “bad skin day” and 20% made an appointment with a specialist soon after.

The study, commissioned via OnePoll, also found that 51% of respondents find knowing which products to trust hinders their quest for the perfect skincare routine.

Nadav Shraibom, for Medovie, added: “Having a skin condition not only impacts a person’s skin, but can affect their daily life, as well as their mental health.

“There is so much information available that it can be difficult for many to discern which are the facts and which are the myths in relation to their skin.
