Allergy Diagnostics Market by 2026

Allergy Diagnostics Market

The allergy diagnostics market is expected to reach USD 8.2 billion by 2026, from USD 4.8 billion in 2021, growing at a CAGR of 11.1% from 2021 to 2026.

Increased levels of environmental pollution:

Exposure to indoor and outdoor air pollutants, allergens and occupational exposure are major risk factors for chronic respiratory disease. The prevalence of allergic disorders among the urban population is higher than those living in rural areas due to higher exposure to environmental pollutants in cities (due to pollution from vehicles and industrial activities).

According to the WHO, more than 80% of people living in urban areas are exposed to air quality levels that exceed WHO safety limits; although this is a global trend, its effects are most severe in urban areas of low-income countries. This is a major indicator for the growth of the allergy diagnostics market as air pollution from motor vehicles has been indicated as one of the major risk factors responsible for allergic diseases.

Epidemiological and toxicological research reveals a causal relationship between air pollution and increased incidence of asthma, allergic rhinitis and other allergic disorders. Studies have also demonstrated a significant increase in the incidence and exacerbation of asthma in urban areas with high concentrations of PM 2.5 (particulate matter 2.5 micrometers or less), carbon dioxide nitrogen and ozone.

Research by members of the allergy/immunological community has shown that pollutants increase both immediate and delayed responses to allergens. Research also indicates that pollutants contribute to disease development, with tobacco smoke and diesel exhaust particles increasing primary antigen sensitization, leading to an IgE response. Epidemiological studies also demonstrate that exposure to ambient air pollutants contributes to increased hospitalizations, decreased lung growth and disease development.

“Consumables are expected to hold the largest share of the allergy diagnostics market, by product and service in 2021.”

Based on product and service, the allergy diagnostics market is segmented into consumables, instruments and services. In 2020, the consumables segment accounted for the largest share of the allergy diagnostics market. The large share of the consumables segment can be attributed to the increase in cases of allergies and the requirement for rapid tests to diagnose allergic conditions. The segment is also expected to witness significant growth over the forecast period.

“In vivo testing is expected to hold the largest share of the allergy diagnostics market, by test type in 2021.”

On the basis of test type, the allergy diagnostics market is segmented into in vivo tests and in vitro tests. In 2020, the in vivo testing segment accounted for the largest share of the allergy diagnostics market. The growth of this segment is mainly driven by the increased adoption of various in vivo tests, such as skin tests. These tests are reliable, safe, practical and economical, compared to their counterparts, in vitro tests.

“Inhaled allergens are expected to hold the largest share of the allergy diagnostics market, by allergen in 2021.”

On the basis of allergens, the allergy diagnostics market is segmented into inhalant allergens, food allergens, drug allergens and other allergens. In 2020, the inhaled allergen segment accounted for the largest share of the allergy diagnostics market due to increasing levels of environmental pollution and increase in pollen associated with other factors such as molds, fungi and dust.
